How to Take the Perfect Selfies

It's selfie time!!!

You know what a selfie is. When you scroll past your favorite social media, you are inundated by beautiful faces. You look at your fave slay queens in awe at how the camera seems to love them. "How can I replicate that? How can I get the perfect selfie?" you wonder. Not to worry, after reading this, your selfie game will never be the same.

Now is taking selfies a vain hobby? It depends! What I can tell you is there are benefits to selfies.

Why you should take great selfies
1. Opportunities- especially on social media, a pretty face can open doors. There are ladies I know who as a result of their super selfie powers have been asked to model face products, be the face of a photo project, etc. There are even people who you follow due to their cute pictures. By increasing their follower count, you open up opportunities for them to be brand influencers.

2. Emphasize your features- because a selfie is basically a self portrait, it emphasizes your features better than a full body picture. You get to notice unique parts about you that you could easily overlook and can feel good about.

3. Sell your services- if you have a service that deals with makeup, hairstyling or face painting, a selfie can show off your work the best and help you promote your services even better.

Best Tips for a Great Selfie:

1. Decide your look- Are you taking a selfie of a made-up face or going makeup free? If you're wearing makeup, apply and blend properly as any mismatch will show since it's a close shot. If you're going makeup free, ensure you wipe first with a face wipe to create a fresh, clean look and eliminate shine and oiliness.

2. Lighting- be close to a light source. The best times for a selfie are in the morning from 6:30 to 8:00am and in the evening from 5:00 to 6:30pm. For a sun- kissed look, snap with your face in the direction of the sun. This illuminates your face and gives perfect highlights. You can also experiment with slightly closed windows or a peeking light source for a different kind of look.

3. Good camera- Nothing too sophisticated, but the camera quality must be good enough to produce clear pictures.

4. Angles- everyone has a good side. Yours could be your left or your right, experiment to see which is most flattering. Hold your phone and tilt. You may decide to look straight to the camera or turn your face slightly to the right, to the left, look down or look away. Decide which features you want to accentuate- your eyes, lips, cheekbones, etc and pose accordingly.

4. Steady hands- shaky hands holding the camera could lead to blurry photos or even darker photos. Ensure you use a stand or tripod or keep your hands steady.

5. Editing- You could polish your photos by applying natural looking filters. Try apps like VSCO and Snapseed for great selfie editing options. Be light handed in your editing to prevent looking fake or even blurring out your photos.

As you can see, taking great selfies is not limited to celebs and baddies. You too can have swoon-worthy photos by having these tips in mind when taking your next selfie. What are you waiting for?

Ready, Set, Cheese!!!
