Negative Effects of Globalization on Africa

Globalization is the process of interaction and integration between people, companies and governments worldwide. The major causes of globalization are advances in transportation and communication technology. Globalization is driven by international trade, foreign investments (where individuals and companies expand and invest in foreign countries) and aided by information technology. Money, products, ideas and culture can be exchanged throughout the world through globalization. While globalization has its advantages like increased profit, opening of Africa to the larger world, job creation, innovation, education, etc, it also comes with serious disadvantages to Africa which will be discussed below. They include: Exploitation Dumping Death of culture Erasure of indigenous industries Loss of jobs Spread of infectious diseases Environmental degradation Exploitation This occurs in two ways and is often seen together: exploitation of labour and exploitation of raw materials.

My Scar Story

What comes to your mind when you see a scar? The story behind it right? Most people have scars; I do too, several actually. Scars could be big or small, raised or flat, new or old, caused by accident or may be self-inflicted. Bottom-line, scars have a story behind them. I have one on my left leg which I consider memorable. It is a small, raised scar caused by a knife stab. Yes a knife stabbed me there, that’s why I consider it memorable. You see, for most people, when they hear about a knife stab, they immediately think of violence. Well in my case, it was peaceful. Now I know what you’re thinking, what the heck is a peaceful stab? Let me tell you the story. I had a cousin who was staying with us temporarily (well, not too temporal but that is story for another day) while he sorted his accommodation out. He had a good job at the bank and was earning a really decent pay for a bachelor. Anyway, a fine day came that he decided he had saved enough, had gotten an apartment and was n

Why You Should Embrace Online Courses

With the advent and rapid growth of technology, you don't have to go near a school to be knowledgeable. Technology has improved and refined the way we do things in communication, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, it is only fair she blesses us in education. Well, blessed we are because online courses are here to stay. There are courses short and long, to acquire soft skills, technical skills, BSc and even masters, all in the comfort of your bedroom. Some sites where online courses can be taken include: Udemy, Udacity, Alison, Edx, and many more. Online courses are a fine source of education and refinement with the following added benefits: 1. Less Expensive - with the mounting and scary amount of debt people rack up in the name of going to the University, online courses are a huge source of relief for those who do not want to spend some years of their life paying off debt accrued in the process of getting formal education. Most online courses are way cheaper

13 Kinds of People You Can Find in the Staff room

Staff rooms are a blessing and a curse! I mean not everyone is going to have the luxury of an office, as in a personal space. Some of us have to be looking at and breathing the same air with other people... Every time. Pause, I don't hate my colleagues. I work a 9 to 5, or in my case, an 8 to 4:00  job. Very convenient and quite enjoyable. I also have my desk in our staff room. This means that I can't escape interactions at my workplace. Now you know that your colleagues can make or mar your work experience. Fortunately, I have no bad colleagues but the diverse personalities man, ugh, kills me sometimes. Some days I laugh throughout the day(actually, there's no day I don't laugh there), some others I argue till my voice cracks, sometimes the things they say leave me wondering how they got here. Anyway, I have decided to round up all the personalities I've experienced since being in the staff room. I'm sure you have met some in your workplace. 1. T

Monsieur Unsure

This one is probably one of those "anointed" people because he was one of the most uncharismatic, diffident, forced figures I've seen. Physically - Tall, round man. Dark skinned, good dentition and bald headed. He had a particularly shiny fabric on in a weird, never-seen-before colour. That alone had me triggered. Was he trying to blind us? What kind of material was that anyway and what shade of rainbow was that? I'm kind of a fashion enthusiast please, bear with me. It was too annoying. His shoes were equally shiny, rings on his fingers(some) and a nice watch. Mannerism - Low voice, sorry, feeble then loud, then feeble to whispers. Looking so meek, his hands were mostly one hand on the other palm as if to show his permanent state of confusion. Does he even know how he got to his present position? His eyes shining and constantly looking at his aides and goons for approval and support for what he says. His speaking, a bit distorted, correct English though laced with

My Encounter with Someone in Authority

In the past two days, I've had a few run-ins with people in Authority ; you know, people that can make things happen, influence things and whatever else power can do for one. The differences though, shocked me. We have an idea or image of what leaders should, would or can be like but there are different kinds of figures. They are understandably human but I guess power may or may not change things. I have two particularly outstanding ones. I will call one the leader and the other, monsieur unsure. THE   LEADER Physically  - the leader was a little above average in height, dark skinned, clean shaven and bald. Like his Barber did an amazing job plus his whole head seemed to be dipped in olive oil. I took some time looking at it trying to see if that old joke about seeing your reflection on someone's head was true. Outfit well put together, simple but neat clothes consisting of nice sneakers, t-shirt and trousers. Mannerism - His voice was firm but low. It's weird, a

Why you should move to a new city

It's a mixture of excitement and fear. You have thought about it for some time now and you are convinced that a change of environment will be good for you.  It could be to a new city, a new state, country or even continent. You are not sure where, but you really want to move. That's wonderful!! I have done my fair share of moving... a lot actually. Incase it's still a desire but you still haven't found a convincing reason why you should make that move. Let me give you reasons to change location. Why you should move  To Pursue Your Passion or Career (Going where the action is) : You've heard from some of your favorite celebs,  they left their country, or state to come to LA to pursue their dreams, sometimes with no money, no friends and all the uncertainties accompanying a new move just so that they might have their chances at success. Moving for a better career is an extremely valid reason. You might have a dream organization you want to work for or you have skill

Can you be too ambitious?

Is it possible to be too ambitious?  Seems the answer is yes.  Many people have had the experience of being told to tone down their desires, fine-tune their ambitions, reduce their goals or the favorite and least noticeable way of saying it "be realistic". Now, being realistic isn't necessarily a bad advice. Problem is, it has been drummed so hard into our ears that, it has become a way for spectators to bring goal getters to their level. We are going too fast here.  What exactly does ambition mean? According to Merriam Webster dictionary Ambition : a particular goal or aim, something that a person hopes to do or achieve : a desire to be successful, powerful, or famous : a desire to do things and be active. Ambition in itself is simply a goal, which every human should have.  Being ambitious is the desire. Now how did being ambitious become something wrong?  The simple answer lies in the word "desire". When it comes to wanting or desiring somet

How often do you say sorry?

As far as I'm concerned, sorry is one the most abused words - used so often but not in the right way. There is a difference between saying I'm sorry and saying sorry. I'm sorry is mostly used to show remorse, used in paying condolences, in sarcasm and wherever applicable. Sorry, on the other hand, is used in many ways which I can't begin to describe. What I want us to talk about is, its necessity in our vocabulary. I've been checking myself for a sometime now. It's actually been a while since I realised that I and many other people I know love this particular word. Want to borrow a pen? Sorry, may I have...? Someone step on you? You address the person by starting with sorry - "sorry, you just stepped on me". Want to get  information on something? We say "sorry, did you or do you..." If you want to be honest, you will recall a good number of times you have said sorry when you are not supposed to. If you look further, you will reali
