After Detty December comes what? Resolution January!
That's right. You resolve to get fit, eat better and replace soda with healthier alternatives like smoothies. You keep it up for a little while and then you begin to slack on your resolve.
Fast forward to late January you are bombarded with Valentine ads with juicy offers and treats you are sure will add more pounds than the average cheat day meal. Do you look away? No! You and your boo deserve a treat come Valentine's day, you can't miss this.
Oh you're single? Well, we all know self-love is the greatest. Add that Valentine's day is on a Friday, so you get to treat yourself for the whole weekend? That's it, you're getting all those chocolates, pizza, alcohol and whatever junk you can lay your hands on.
Blame loved-up February, Resolution January weeps!
After the high from Valentine's day, you realize you have fallen all the way off from your healthy goals. Thankfully there's always a second or third and maybe fourth chance so you go looking out for healthy drink and smoothie recipes you can make at home.
Welcome, I've been waiting for you.
These recipes have been tried by me and I can tell you that they are delicious, healthy, are not difficult to make, and a few may even have detoxifying properties.
They also have relatively cool names, christened by me of course.
Let's get to it:
1. Orange zinger- okay, apart from this, but still cool yeah? This is a very simple recipe consisting of just oranges, carrots and a little ginger. Just peel off the skin of the oranges, wash and chop your carrots and peel a little amount of ginger. Blend together and serve. It has a delicious sharp taste and is best enjoyed cold.
2. Fruity smoothie- If you love fruit salad served with milk in your bowl, you're going to love this. Slice whatever kind of fruits(my faves are pawpaw, pineapple, carrots, banana and watermelon) you want to and in whatever amount. Add milk or yoghurt to the fruits, blend and you are good to go. Yummy!
3. Watermelon zinger- this is a recipe i learnt from my mum. It quickly became a favourite because of how effective it is at relieving indigestion. Blend a large slice of watermelon, a clove of ginger and a dash of lime juice. Not the best taste but it's good.
4. Green tea mix- Starting with a cup of green tea as a base, add in pineapple slices, banana, greens(spinach) and a handful of any berry of your choice. Blend together and serve. Very interesting taste.
5. Kunu'aya- Yes, our very own drink from the north. Super healthy and tasty. Serves as an aphrodisiac I hear but don't take my word for it, try it out. Blend together, coconut slices, tiger nuts and dates. Serve cold. Delicious!
6. Dark ice-cream- this is one of the yummiest things you'd taste. Very interesting taste and can quickly become a favourite. Into a blender add a bunch of bananas, yoghurt, a tablespoon of cocoa and 1-3 tablespoons of dark coffee(depending on your taste). Blend and freeze. Serve in small plates or cups and add berries on top if you want. This is perfect if you are looking to get your coffee needs met and still enjoy a less sugary form of ice cream.
7. Fruit-supplement mix- This is perfect for those who take green supplements and powders but can't seem to hold it down. Into a blender add a banana, pineapple, pawpaw, orange and apple slices and 2 tablespoons (or as required) of your green supplement and blend. The key here is to add the fruits in small quantities because you want to finish this at once or in a day. This should be an incentive to take those supplements.
Tips:
1. It's best to prepare a little amount at a time with each lasting not more than three days and kept in the fridge.
2. Unless you love to taste pulp and fibre, blend properly.
3. If you are trying to cut out coffee, you can use dark cocoa only especially in the dark ice-cream recipe. Gives a nice chocolate flavour.
Enjoy!
